entry to keep you happy? working on: 4. Leroy-Beaulieu understands imperialism as “the systematic action of an organized people upon another people whose organization is defective; and it presupposes that it is the state itself, and not only some individuals, which is responsible for the mission.” Imperialism was the duty of the people to go forth in the world and transform the “barbarian countries” into functioning, working countries that could be of profit. Anyone who worked had the right, the ability, the duty to go forth and “work effectively at colonization.” 5. Leroy-Beaulieu states that investments should be made in colonies due to them being “enormous producers of capital.” He says that the countries have trouble spending their vast monetary supply, and therefore should invest in colonies. He makes his point very strongly in saying that investing in colonies would be much more productive for the entire human race, and would create a greater increase in capital than if the same money had been invested in agricultural, industrial, or social improvements. 6. Leroy-Beaulieu highly contradicts himself in saying that it would be “a great illusion to found colonies in the hopes of revenue.” He had said previously in the article that investment in colonies would cause a great increase in percentage of revenue. However, his argument makes sense. He makes his point in stating that the mother country would have to spend money in defending the country, etc, and that eventually the new country would have the possibility of overrunning the old country. 7. The most compelling of Ferry’s defenses is the last point he makes. He basically says that France must colonize in order to thrive in the imperialistic age. The competition between European nations keeps France on her toes. Should France fail to colonize and remove themselves from world affairs, then she will fall from her place of grace in global standards. She will fall from being one of the mightiest nations in the world to lower ranks.
